Fight together against poverty
The Situation of the poor families, let’s to fight together against poverty!!
The first opportunity to meet with a poor family was with Gonzalo when Gonzalo, Jesus, Carla and I were visiting some refugees families to invite them to Open Sunday.
I remember one of these families invited us to drink coffee with them and they gave us some biscuits also. It was incredible how they took care about us even if they don’t have so much to offer.
They were 5 kids (2 little kids, 2 girls maybe 18 and 20 and 1 teenage guy) plus the parents, and they were living in a little flat just with one kitchen and living room, one toilet and another room with one big bed.
This means that the other kids were living and sleeping in the common place in the living room just with some mattresses that everyday they needed to put in order.
The kids go to school thanks to the Danish government who help them, the Mother stays at home taking care of the kids and the house and the Father is working.
Even though the father is working and gets a salary and they receive some money from the government it is not enough because they are a big family and to live in a country that is expensive like Denmark is not easy.
For me the most surprising thing was that even though they were living in really bad conditions because they didn’t have a good place to stay, really little to live on, all of them without any privacy, they couldn’t do many things because they had little money, sometimes needing to share the food between them or taking fewer showers trying to use less water, they were happy and really thankful for the new opportunity to live in Denmark, to live in a place with peace and where the kids can go to school, etc…
So I can’t imagine how hard was their life before and all the things that they overcome.
Apart from this invitation to come for a coffee, tea, biscuits they also said that they will come to Open Sunday and they will bring some food.
I remember that I left with some good lessons learned. About the things that don’t make you happy and about how kind can be the persons who don’t have so much. It was amazing.
The parents never stop to fight every day to give food and a good life to their kids, but I think that in this case it is also thanks to the government who gave them a new opportunity and help every day. They took this opportunity and the father started to work hard to get a salary.
Maybe the other option to try to solve the problem in these kind of families is also to get an education completely for free, even if it is some conference about nutrition. To prepare some little trips in the weekends or events like in Lindersvold one time per month we prepare where they can join and have fun and know more people from different cultures, eating good food and having fun, adults and kids together.
Another option is to help them to grow their own food or go with them one or two times per week to do dumpster diving because actually here in Denmark there is a lot of waste food in the rubbish containers and sometimes it is in really good condition.
To help the kids with the studies or being integrated in the Danish society. Even help the girls to find some jobs to help the family economy.
Of course you can give them clothes that you can take from the schools or from tools room and then they don’t need to buy new clothes with their limited money.
I think there are many ways to help poor families, even if it is difficult sometimes but often there is something that we can do even if they are small things and little acts.
So, at least for me after this day I just became more conscious about how the world and the life are for some people and that for us to help with little acts costs us nothing.
The second poor family was when with my team we were in Copenhagen to give some coffee and tea to the homeless people. At the same time we also give them some food and sleeping bags.
I remember that, that day we found a couple living in the street with really, really poor conditions. It was in October so in Denmark it was starting to be really cold. They were just with a few clothe, a not so warm sleeping bag and a big bag full of things.
They were sleeping completely on the floor. They also have two dogs, one little dog and another big one that they had like their kids just to get love and company for themselves. So, they also needed to feet them, even though this couple didn’t have so much food to eat for themselves.
They accepted a hot tea and few pieces of fruit but didn’t accept a new and good sleeping bag. They started talking, the woman was really nervous with a little dog in her arms. She was full of wounds in the arms and ears, maybe from the dirt. Actually they were really dirty with dirty clothes for sure. Maybe they couldn’t take a shower for the last month…
They were smoking weed and the guy started to explain to us that he has been sleeping in the street for about 5 years. After that time he realized that he had cancer and they can’t do anything to cure him because of money and also because the cancer was increasing.
So, he told us that he was just waiting to die and just after that he started to cry when he told us “ I have fought a lot but this life is very hard ”. At that I also cried. I couldn’t contain myself.
A strong rage, pity and sadness flooded me because I didn’t understand why the world is so cruel and why these things have to happen.
After I saw this I couldn’t stop thinking about it, I don’t have any magic potion to solve these situations that are in all the world but I think everything is about conscience and altruism. We are living in a quite selfish society where the people who have more, they want more.
But maybe if we had a bit more humanity, maybe we could give a little and help those who need more to achieve a more balanced world.
I think we already did a really good action by spending one day just going around Copenhagen and giving out some food, hot drinks, clothes or sleeping bags. If you can do this every day you are helping these people a lot.
Another thing could be trying to find some place where they can sleep, even if it is with a simple mattress on the floor but at least not in the street.
The next step maybe could be to give them an opportunity, help the people who are taking drugs with a place of detoxification for example, or maybe give an opportunity with small jobs to start little by little and where they can get a salary.
Maybe we could also give to them some education about health, hygiene, nutrition, home items, economy, etc…
I believe that big changes start with small steps and that no one deserves to live in these conditions.
So, please let’s make a better world, let’s to fight together against poverty!!
