Plastic is a great invention that has simplified human life in many ways, however in the last 60 years plastic has spread so much that the planet is invaded. We have gone from using plastic for important and useful things such as medicine or construction to use it to pack fruit or vegetables for which nature has already provided protection. This disproportionate use of plastic has led to a serious pollution problem.
A large percentage of plastic produced each year is used only once and then thrown away with harmful consequences on the environment. We live in a plastic world. On LAND some types of plastic release harmful chemicals, which penetrate deeply reaching groundwater. The damage is very serious for the living species that live in and consumne this polluted water. The areas used as landfills are constantly filled with plastic waste. In the OCEANS, plastic waste is transported by currents forming large islands. The decomposition of this material creates micro particles that are impossible to collect.
For ANIMALS plastic diffusion is highly harmful. In the stomach of some marine animals, such as the sea turtle, plastic pieces were found, which caused their death. On the other hand, marine mammals are sometimes trapped in plastic products, as the plastic behaved like nets, risking being killed. According to research, many seagulls ingest a number of pieces of plastic that eventually causes their death. Finally for MAN many animals that ingest plastic arrive on our tables and we find ourselves eating plastic that is obviously very harmful. Some of the chemicals can be harmful to humans through skin absorption, causing dermatitis.
So these are some example about what happens with plastic waste. Plastic pollution is a problem that needs to be addressed. But how? Is the world doing something? Above all, are governments worried or are more interested in the gain that leads to the production and sale of plastic?
Plastic has changed our lives for the better, but at the same time has already changed our lives for the worse. It is important we put more focus on awareness of plastic waste and what we can do to reduce or eliminate the spread of plastic that is harmful to humans and the earth.
