From The Field: Pre-school Amalika, Malawi
In our first week we managed to visit 8 of the pre-schools surrounding the Amalika Teacher Training College.
We got a chance to speak to the teachers, school committee members and some of the chiefs of the villages.
The state of the buildings differed from place to place, some classes were held in local churches, while other schools did not have a building at all or had buildings in really bad conditions.
The communities seemed very encouraging towards the whole idea of the preschools, but due to the great poverty found in Malawi some of the schools still can not afford to provide a healthy meal to the kids.
All the teachers have spoken of their work for free and while some get some support from their neighbors in the form of soap or food most of them have to manage on their own.
We are not aware of the lack of teaching materials for the students. In the coming weeks we will visit the rest of the schools in order to analyze the situation in all the communities and see what improvements can be done.
