Small actions can also fight capitalism and support the poor
Sometimes the easiest things look very complicated, but it is us who make them so complicated. In this case I’m talking about our garden and our hens in my school: Holsted, and how important these experiences are for me.
First, the garden farming project, that we started with great enthusiasm, and it was in this case more work that we were able to do properly because of the situation, but at the end we just started, slowly, slowly, and now we can be very proud of it. We got dozens of strawberries, we rediscovered chard in many ways, we found infinite ways to cook squash, and we really enjoyed our tomatoes from the first day, and the list doesn’t finish here, but it’s very exciting just to talk about it. The price? Not high, and the price for our planet very low, and also good for our health. What else? That is something that means also a protest against the big corporations and the big supermarkets, and a protest against the system, just to say “we can do it”.
And then, if I’m writing this it is also because now we are real farmers, and we have our own hens for more than two weeks, and they are present everyday in our lives now. From the beginning it was an adventure. We built the house, we managed to make a fence, and we brought the hens from Tvind. Then every day we had a surprise, and also the neighbor had one the first day… But anyway, now we learnt how to take care of them and for the students of the Botilbud Care Home it is a great idea to take responsibility and they are doing really well with our help. Of course, still a lot of work, more that we could think, but the result and I don’t mean just the eggs, it’s really good. Also because of how that makes us feel, and again we did it, and yes, we eat our eggs, and we take care of 11 animals without any preparation. Now, more than ever: “learning by doing”.
