Speech to Say goodbye august team 2017
Dear August team,
Now you have finally finished the first 12 periods of the program and for the next 2 periods you will leave us for 8 months to Mozambique and Malawi. Hurray!
After having studied theories and hypotheses about the Poor, about life in Poor countries,
And after having studied Pedagogy, Theory and Practice.
You will now develop these 2 subjects: Fighting with the Poor & Pedagogy in a deeper way.
Culture, Cultural differences, Finding Solutions, Expressing yourself clearly, Confusion,Trying to understand & Never Give Up, will become even more part of your life then it already is and this will add to your rucksack of experience, knowledge, understanding and more experiences.
You will actually meet The Poor even though you might not like to call the people you meet so!
We think that you are ready for this. We think that after the initial shocks and surprises of entering a new country and a new organization, with new ways of working, you will find your ways and get on well.
Why do we think that?
It is because you have shown this last year that you are excellent community builders.
You have shown that you are very well capable to work, live and take the lead together with all kinds of other people.
You have build healthy relations with the youngsters at your small schools.
You have build good cooperations with the teachers at your small schools.
You have build good relations with each other in your team.
You have shown how to be problem solvers and peace makers.
You have shown how to take part in creating something big, like a Climate Conference.
And you have made good connections with all at DRH, other students, teachers, volunteers and headmasters. You succeeded in doing all this and that is no small feat!
And you did so mostly in a spirit of lightheartedness and comradeship. Always caring and ready to welcome new people ariving.Thank you for that! It has been a pleasure to have you with us here.
We see you as the embracers of Diversity.Diversity, as the Art of thinking independently together!
Remember the program book: ‘Teaching and learning for culturing personalities with collective abilities.’
That is you! You have become these personalities with Collective Abilities!
And that is exactly what you need to get things done in Malawi & in Mozambique, because: Alone the world changes you, together we change the world!
Isn’t it time now for a collective rage against Capitalism? This monster which consequences keep on hunting us, chasing us down? Isn’t it? Or may be we should stop here?
Just one thing though:
Recently I have learned some more about how Capitalism actually damages our planet. Not only us and the connections between us, but the planet itself! It is horrendous!
This damage that Capitalism is doing to our planet is not just a little by-product that we can fix. It is big, impressive, shocking, it is too big!
Fossil fuels extraction, leaks and pollutions, coal mines, industrial agriculture, the cutting of forests, the mining of dozens of other minerals and the pollutions caused by it, the dumping in the sea, the emptying of the sea from fish and life, the burning of fossil fuels as if there is no tomorrow…
The damage that Capitalism is doing to our earth, our planet, is a core issue, something that cannot be fixed within the Capitalist system. So we have to get rid of it! And that we have started to do: through community building!
So where capitalism causes alienation, the disconnect between people and nature, there we build community with both people and nature! So here you see, my dear community builders! You are needed! And we are busy, we all have to move on!
Remember, now you go away for 8 months: You are doing a good work, just keep on doing it!
Your teacher, Gert Tjoelker.
