The Challenges of Education in Malawi
Since August 2018 I have been working in Malawi as a Development Instructor (volunteer). I work in a school that trains teachers for rural primary schools. My position as a Teacher in the Teacher Training College includes many different responsibilities such as organizing meetings, qualifying study tasks, giving courses, planning events, making garden farming and working with youth clubs around my working place.
I write here about some challenges of education in Malawi. I have observed that preschools are very essential in preparing children to gain some basic knowledge and it gives the children a head start by preparing them for the challenges of primary schools. Unfortunately in Malawi there are no public preschools children can join and many families with low income cannot afford the private schools. When I visit preschools and primary schools, I see that teachers are facing different issues. They teach around 60 students, sometimes more than 60. In the classroom there is one chair, one table and blackboard and the students sit on the floor because of lack economy to buy necessary materials that belong to a classroom.
Other problems that exist in Malawian schools include inadequate amounts of teachers, lack of proper learning infrastructures, and limited teaching and learning resources. The main factor that affects education in Malawi is poverty, and this is a huge barrier. The government, along with local and international organizations are making efforts to start projects to solve this issue.
In DAPP (Development Aid from People to People) where I work, Development Instructors together with Malawian volunteers are working to develop this issue. They are distributing school materials, upgrading and constructing school buildings and training the volunteer teachers. The volunteer teachers in the primary schools are usually women from the villages.
We are working towards a future where all Malawian children will get their education rights to go to school and learn for life.
