Traveling and sharing experiences
Sharing moments. Creating a real group
It’s good to spend some time hanging around, just getting to know the people who are around you. Sometimes it is nice to speak about something not related to the project at all. At some point you realize you want to know the real person, not just the teammate. I want to know all their background not just their previous voluntary work. I want to know about their life. It is not gossip, it is a necessary step to finding a new friend. We all need friends and after this week we are a little closer to finding them.
This trip to Odense is the perfect example of how combine a necessary act with some fun. We needed to go to Odense to do some bureaucratic stuff. We could go and come back right after it, but one teammate suggested the possibility to do something more. We started checking possibilities and what you are going to read was the result.
Obviously we went straight to the public office when we arrived to the city. But once we were done the real trip started. We organized a meeting with “From street to school”, an NGO which helps children in Afghanistan to get a proper education. We shared a really interesting talk where we introduced our work to each other. They work as a fundraising organization to sponsor several children of school age giving them the opportunity to attend schools. They started in 2011 with 6 children but right now they are helping more than 70 children at the same time. They are doing important work that deserves to be recognized. So check their website [fsts.dk] if you want to know more about them.
After that we had the rest of the day to organize whatever we wanted to do. So we choose the easier and at the same time the nicer option: we went for a walk. Odense is the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen. The city, proud of him, has created tens of sculptures based on his fairy tales and distributed them all around the city center. So we went one by one visiting them and speaking about each story: “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”, “The Little Mermaid” or “The Emperor’s New Clothes” are just some of the many sculptures that we saw.
In this way the day became night so fast. So it was time to rest. In this matter we are grateful to Gelmina and Gabriele, both part of a DNS project, who let us stay over at their place for the night. We had a really nice time speaking, sharing stories and experiences, playing cards and, the best, having an amazing dinner with them. It is impossible to complain with such wonderful charming hosts. We could see how their project works and how are they dealing with it. We all hope to meet again soon.
The trip was short, but we shared a lot of talks, jokes, laughs and fun. We went shopping, we drank tea, we were relaxing and visiting a new place. We did not speak about what we did last week in my small school, but we shared anecdotes about when we were the students in our childhood schools. We did not check if we have done all the tasks for this week, but we spoke about the kind of task that we had in the university. We did not have lunch at the same table that we always sit in the dining hall, instead we went to a food market looking for something different.
It is good to work in our project, that’s what we came for and that’s what we are doing, but as I said in the beginning, in order to create a strong group we need to really know each other. We need, from time to time, to do something different. And this time, we did.
